Have you ever wondered what happens behind the scenes to prepare the KeyBank Center for performances by artists like Paul McCartney or the Trans Siberian Orchestra, or for Sabres and Bandits games? Take a look inside KeyBank Center with UB alumnus Stan Makowski Jr., BA '83, vice president for arena operations.
A native of Buffalo, Makowski is responsible for managing all operational aspects of the facility: engineering, maintenance, technical communications and arena security staff as well as the changeover, housekeeping, event staffing and parking efforts for events. He was also heavily involved in the construction of the HARBORCENTER complex across from the arena.
Makowski originally joined the organization in 1985 as the rink manager at Sabreland, the team’s practice facility at that time. After four years at Sabreland, Makowski was named the director of community relations and promotions, a post he held until 1992 when he became director of operations. In 1996, when the Sabres moved from Memorial Auditorium to its current home, Makowski was named director of arena operations, where he served for 15 years, before being promoted to his current role.
